Royal Boskalis Westminster N.V is a leading global services provider operating in the dredging and earthmoving, maritime infrastructure and maritime services sectors. We provide innovative all-round solutions in the oil and gas, ports and land reclamation and coastal defense markets all around the world.

They addressed the Willem the Kooning Academy and asked if their students could design a book containing their latest work, project Dordtsche Kil in Dordrecht. I, together with 2 other graphic design students was selected to visualize this project.

Over one year time, we worked together with photographers, copywriters, printers, bookbinderies and the contractor. As team leader I was responsible of most of the communication and of course part of the design.
A very informative project that started in 2010, has come to an end and resulted in this book.

They say the European doesn’t seem to exist. By creating one European newspaper this project acts as a reaction to the social differences throughout Europe. All this is to change the view of Europeans on an otherwise divided Europe.

Every chapter in the book is devoted to the ambiance of that specific part. At first everything is controlled and factual. Continue reading and conversations start to overtake the layout of the story, to finally end with a computer (HAL) that takes over the complete story. Content and typography wise.

The current ABN website shows a lot of information about loans, mortgages and investments. I find it hard to believe that, that’s the service people really need in times of economic crisis. Therefor I focused my design on one aspect of banking, which is regulating you own money in- and outcome.

I designed a internet banking system that is easy to use by taking control over certain shapes. These shapes are inspired on the current ABN logo which is a shield. When your bank account logo is showing a shield, your money in- and outcome is well regulated and controlled. But when distorted, it shows that you are either spending to much or not saving enough.

By only using this shape together with your bank account information, I wanted to put emphasis on the fact that in times of crisis, we shouldn’t need loans and higher mortgages. In stead, better control over our own money is what we need.

Currently, social media networds aren’t only there just to be used by people to get in touch. Certain algoritms they use are able to scan and filter information. By this, social networks like Facebook are able to control their users in- and output of information. Together with Google’s personalized search results, users get a higher change to stumble upon information which is already filtered for them.
So what happens when you let the social network sites control your information, compared to when you don’t let them.

An abstract form of the North Sea Jazz festival in my point of view. I think that visitors of the festival should be reminded of unique way jazz originated and still exists. By creating 5 different layers of colors and forms, which are visual representations of an emotion. I tried to capture my own jazz song in a graphic form depicting what jazz was, should be and still is.

A poster depicting a moment out of the life of Deputy Prime Minister Maxime Verhagen of the CDA party. From a distance, Verhagen looks like he is posing for his photo to be taken. From close by he happens to have strings attached to his fingers.
The poster shows the actual power Verhagen actually has. Although he currently is in a coalition with to other parties named PVV and VVD, most of the decisions are made by him.

The poster comes together with two other posters depicting PVV leader Geert Wilders and VVD’s Mark Rutte which are designed by other classmates. A photo with the three posters combined will be uploaded soon.

By investigating the economic crisis, I found out that the world relies on a certain banking system. Through this system, the money we own is property of the bank, meaning that we are in a constant debt with our banks.
With this debt, banks can spend and loan money whenever they want, as long as they still have a certain amount in their ‘vault’. This amount of saved money allows the banks to create money whenever they want by which they control the worlds money flow.
Because of this system, governments tend to get bigger debts, and can finally go bankrupt. This is because the world consumes to much, since money isn’t physical and creating money limitless. By this, every country nowadays is in debt with banks.

Since this debt arose out of a limitless resource of money, I created an infographic that shows how it would have been if we relied on limited natural resources. By this, debts are constructed the way countries consume resources compared to the resources they actually own. Designed like this, the infographic shows a new world that relies on real physical boundaries, in stead of digital ones that are influenced by banks.

Designed by research, this redesign of the NRC Handelsblad shows the most well pronounced and worst pronounced articles. Although there is a lot of difference between the to types of news articles, they can’t go without one another.

A newspaper needs balance, needs to have opinions but has to be impartial as well. The design consists out of both types of articles combined in one large block if information. Then by cutting it into the format of a newspaper, a flow of information resulted in a totally new design for the newspaper. Both types combined, surrounding each other closely while respecting both formats.
